Dryer Sheets are Slowly Killing You & The World
Dryer sheets are among the worst offenders for harboring chemicals linked to hormone disruption and asthma.
Good news is you can survive without dryer sheets. In fact, humans have been successfully washing clothes for hundreds of years without modern-day scented laundry square of death.
A dryer sheet patent didn’t even exist until 1969 from Conrad J. Gaiser. This creator went on to sell the patent to Procter & Gamble, who we all know is “REALLY” looking after out health.
Why were Dryer Sheets created? When clothes are tumbling together in the dryer, they can become stuck together through static electricity. Dryer sheets are designed to prevent this because they are cationic or positively charged. They equalize the electrons to prevent static.
This can also be accomplished by drying clothes on a humid day, taking clothes still slightly damp and hanging them up, or running a wire hanger over them once out of the dryer.
Conrad J. Gaiser figured out how to treat small sheets of material with fabric softener in 1969. When the sheets were put in the dryer with laundry, the heat and moisture warmed up the softener and spread it across the clothing.
However, once they solved the static problem, dryer sheet makers now try to add flare with fragrance. This is where the big shit storm enters.
Why are Dryer Sheets bad? Besides making the dryer sheets out of square wispy, nonwoven polyester that are intended for single-use and cannot be composted or recycled, the chemicals on the material are laced with toxins.
Dryer sheets can affect not only personal health, but also public and environmental health. The toxic chemicals are released in to the air by dryer vents and they are soaked into your clothes.
You know that “clean scent” you just smelled coming off your clothes? Well actually it’s toxic chemicals tricking your brain into thinking it is fresh.
Why do companies do it? Because it is cheap and you’ll want to keep buying their product. In the end, they get rich off of making you sick.
A study was done in 2011 were researchers examined the chemicals spewing out of dryer vents. They discovered 7 hazardous air pollutants, such as Acet aldehyde and Benzene, which are NOT safe at any level and are also found in vehicle exhaust.
Acet aldehyde is a common ingredient used in synthetic fragrance blends. It is known as a carcinogen and can have adverse impact on Kidneys, nervous and respiratory systems.
Even though it is regulated in outdoor emissions, it is a free-for-all when it comes to homes use! WE SHOULD ALL BE APAULED!
To make matters worse, the current United States Consumer Product Safety Commission does NOT require dryer sheet manufacturers to list actual ingredients, including the chemicals used in fragrance blends.
Scented laundry products spewing from dryer vents pollutes our fresh air. More than 12% of the US population reported negative health symptoms associated with dryer vent emissions, such as respiratory issues, skin issues, and severe head tension.
Alternative to using Drying Sheets
Add 3 Tablespoons of baking soda to wash cycle to soften clothes
Add ¼ cup white vinegar to rinse cycle to soften and remove static
Hang dry clothes or dry halfway and then hand to reduce static
Smooth clothes with a wire hanger to remove positive static charges
Purchase chemical free dryer cloths that are reusable

Wool dryer balls do several things for your clothes, your health, and your wallet all at the same time.
When you put several wool dryer balls with your load of laundry, they will quickly absorb moisture from clothes. This helps the clothes dry faster. At the same time, the balls will continue to lose moisture making the air inside the machine humid and reduce static.
As the balls toss around in dryer, they fluff up your laundry and prevent clothes from rubbing together which will reduce static and soften your clothes.
Also, adding a few drops of high-quality essential oil to the balls can give your clothes a light, natural scent.
The life of wool dryer balls depends on the material they were made from. High quality authentic wool dryer balls can last for many years.
Dryer balls can reduce your money spent on laundry by cutting the cost of buying softeners, dryer sheets, and electricity.
Wool dryer balls are zero-waste and do not pump harmful chemicals into the air that affect our health and the health of the environment.
Our Changes Justin and I have been using homemade high-quality wool dryer balls for almost nine months now. They are easy to use. Our clothes have been static-free. They are also soft and smell wonderful because I add a couple drops of essential oil to each ball before starting the load.
Freeing our lives from toxic chemicals is one of the best decisions we have ever made. Using wool dryer balls brings a sense of calming knowing that we are not negatively affect our health, the health of others, or the environment with our laundry.
