Why you should dehydrate your own Apple Chips

Today, I am going to talk a little bit about dehydrating foods and then jump into showing how to make dehydrated apple chips. Let’s go. 

Drying is the oldest method of preserving food. It reaches all the way back to cavemen days when hunters would dry their meat from their most recent kill. Dehydrating food is the perfect way to keep food from going bad. Dried foods keep well because the moisture content is so low that spoilage organisms cannot grow. It is also easier to travel with because it small and lighter. 


Dried food is an excellent way to preserve foods that can add variety to meals and provide delicious, nutritious snacks. The thing is, is that dehydrated foods maintain all of their nutritional value minus the water. The nutrition is not altered from cooking it. So, the little-dried bits that are left from dehydrating are loaded with energy, vitamins, and needed minerals that help our bodies be healthy. And this is why it is an awesome snack. 


While, yes, you can purchase dehydrated food from many different places or sources, I prefer to do it myself. It is so simple and easy to dehydrate my own food that it’s not worth the expense of buying it.

I can also monitor what is exactly going into my dried food. Many dried foods you find in the store have added sugars and preservatives. Which kind of defeats the purpose of it being healthy. However, they are still loaded with all the other good stuff too. So, I guess you decide. I suggest, unless you have a source that you can trust, to try dehydrating your own foods. Since I live in Minnesota, which does not have a hot and dry climate, I have found that using a dehydrator is the easiest way to dry my foods. 


And today, I’m going to show you how to make dehydrated apple chips. These have a fall flavor because, dang-it anyhow, I love fall! It is my absolute favorite season, and apple chips are one of my most favorite snacks. So, I am happy to be showing how to dehydrate your own apples. 

First, I spray down my apples with a mixture of white vinegar and water to remove any pesticides or other chemicals that made there to the surface of my apples.


I then mix together my dipping marinade. I add in lemon juice so the apples won’t turn brown. And then some cinnamon bark essential from Young Living’s vitality line. And then some honey. This little marinade will give it that fall flavor. 


I then cut the apples one at a time, dip them in the marinade, and then put them on a rack of the dehydrator. I cut them one at a time because the apples can turn brown before going on the rack. Plus, I don’t want to cut too many apples and not have them all fit on the rack. If can also use a mandolin to thinly slice apples if you prefer not to cut them. 


After the racks are full, I then put them on the dehydrator and place the lid on top. Then I turn the dehydrator on and let it run for a few hours while I walk and do something else. 
I check the apples occasionally to see how they are doing. The thinner you cut the apples, the less time they will take to dry. However, since I cut my kind of thick, I can put more apples on the racks but they will take more time to dry. 


Once, the apples are dried, take them off of the rack and store them in an airtight container. When dehydrated foods are stored in the open they can become chewy especially if you live in a humid climate. 


The last thing you need to do is eat and enjoy your clean, nutrient-packed snack. To make this process even more sustainable, make sure the energy you use to dehydrate your food comes from a clean, renewable source.
